I saw some images recently from a photographer who advocates an extremely simple, one light setup and his work is phenomenal! So I wanted to play with the idea and see where it took me.
Sometimes when I get the itch to shoot it is just too short of notice to line up a model so I grab my all-time favorite go-to model, my daughter, Chloe! She loves to be in front of the camera so convincing her to help me wasn’t difficult. With the onslaught of this latest blast of arctic cold (it’s currently 39℉!), I wanted to protect my 3-year-old model today so I looked around the house and picked out the stonework around our fireplace as the location. So I pulled out the B800 and beauty dish and got set up. Of course, as soon as she realized she was going to get in front of the camera, Chloe immediately went to get changed and convince mommy to brush her hair. (As you can tell, by the time we started shooting her hair was all whacked out again..) I positioned the light stand about 4 feet from the wall and to be just out of the frame. I have to admit, I like this simple one-light setup. It forces me to think about exactly where that light is falling.

Shot with my 70-200mm and a single strobe with a socked 22″ beauty dish.
