The Professional Amateur

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

On occasion, someone will approach me while I’m out shooting and ask if I’m a pro or ‘just an amateur’. I’m always troubled with how to respond. Although the english definition of “amateur” defines the amateur as a nonprofessional enthusiast, the original French word means simply “lover of”. It says nothing about compensation. In our culture, it is somehow assumed that if you’re being paid to do something, you can’t enjoy it. I am a paid professional but I love photography! If the primary goal of the artist is for anything other than creating art and honing his/her craft, the art cannot help but be effected. (That’s one reason I always have a personal project I’m working on. Personal projects allow me to do exactly what I want to do without any outside influence.) But don’t get me wrong. I understand we all have to make a living and there’s nothing wrong with pursuing a better life for oneself. So then, how do I answer that inevitable question when it comes? Even though it might fly in the face of those with the ‘I hate my job’ mentality, my standard answer while handing them my card is, “I’m blessed for being a professional amateur!”

Review: New Media Photographer Podcast

Friday, January 8th, 2010

This is a first for me and my blog; A review! OK, it’s really not much of a review but rather a recommendation!

Whether you’re looking for a professional photographer or work in the photography industry, you know this simple truth: Traditional marketing techniques, be it magazine/newspaper ads, phone book ads, etc., don’t reach this generation very well. Having only started my photography business last year, this is a truth I had to learn the hard way! My undeclared New Year’s resolution this year is to develop a much better marketing strategy and let people know I’m here! In my quest for information, I recently discovered an awesome podcast that is helping me discover how to market in 2010. It’s impacted me and how I do business and I’m sure it will for others, as well. It’s called “New Media Photographer“. The host, Rosh Sillars, releases the weekly podcast as well as posts regular blog entries to newmediaphotographer.com, all geared toward helping the photographer better relate to his/her clients. Check it out today!
